Itchy throat? Allergies, other causes and remedies

Reading time: about 3 minutes
Throat itching is one of the most common annoyances during the change of seasons, often underestimated but it can hide an ongoing allergic reaction.
Pollen, dust mites and dust are more present in the air at certain times of the year, stimulating reactions in the respiratory system and particularly in the throat. But what are the causes of this disorder, how does it manifest itself and above all: how can we alleviate it?
When we speak of a tingling or itchy throat, we are referring to a sensation of slight irritation or tingling that can appear alone or accompanied by sneezing, a dry cough or a runny nose. There can be many causes, but among the most common are:
- Seasonal allergies (allergic rhinitis): caused by pollen, grasses or moulds.
- Household allergens: such as dust, animal hair or mites.
- Air pollution or dry environments, which dehydrate the mucous membranes.
- Temperature fluctuations: frequent during seasonal changes, they put the oropharyngeal mucosa under stress.
In the case of allergies, the immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances. This triggers an inflammatory response involving the upper airways, causing various complaints. Persistent itching or tingling of the throat and palate is among the first signs felt, often accompanied by an uncomfortable feeling of dryness that also makes swallowing difficult. To this can be added a wheezing cough, which tends to occur especially at night, frequent sneezing and itchy eyes with continuous tearing. These are symptoms that, although initially mild, can become annoying to the point of impairing sleep quality and negatively affecting voice and general well-being.
Why does itchy throat get worse when the seasons change?
With the change of seasons, irritants in the air increase and at the same time our organism is more vulnerable. Prolonged exposure to allergens combined with drier air can inflame the mucous membranes. Heating or the use of air conditioners also has an impact: the treated air tends to be drier, altering the natural protective film of the throat.
Moreover, the immune system can be temporarily weakened by climatic stress and the body's physiological fatigue in readjusting to the new rhythms.
There are, however, some good habits that can be used to prevent or reduce itchy throats, such as maintaining good hydration, thus keeping the oropharyngeal mucosa moist, favouring its natural barrier function. It is also good to avoid excessively dry spaces and reduce exposure to allergens as much as possible.
However, when the itching of the throat persists or becomes a daily occurrence even with correct behaviour, specific throat products may be useful. Throat gels or sprays and natural syrups are an effective solution, as they form a protective barrier over the irritated mucosa, moisturising it and reducing inflammation.
Many of these products contain soothing plant extracts, known for their emollient and anti-inflammatory action. Some medical devices for oropharyngeal use, specially formulated for those suffering from discomfort related to allergic rhinitis, can also be safely used by children and are designed for natural and immediate relief.
Itchy throat is therefore a symptom that should not be underestimated, especially if it occurs with some regularity. Recognising its causes and acting promptly, also with the help of natural remedies and specific devices, can make all the difference in improving quality of life.
